Old Fort Niagara will honor active duty military and veterans on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, by offering free family admission to anyone who has served in the armed forces, past or present. The fort will present several special programs during the day, including musket and cannon firings and blacksmithing demonstrations.

Veterans and active duty military personnel are asked to bring some form of identification documenting their service. Free family admission will also be extended to families of military personnel currently deployed overseas or outside the area.

Armed Forces Day was created Aug. 31, 1949, and approved by President Harry S. Truman. The purpose of the holiday is to increase understanding and respect for all segments of the military, to demonstrate the U.S. military is ready for any challenge or threat it may face, and to honor all people who serve in the armed forces.

Hours for the Armed Forces Day program will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Visitors must arrive by 4:30 p.m. to be admitted. For more information, call the fort at 716-745-7611 or visit www.oldfortniagara.org.

Old Fort Niagara is located in Youngstown, 14 miles north of Niagara Falls via the Robert Moses Parkway North. Old Fort Niagara is a National Landmark and State Historic Site operated by the Old Fort Niagara Association (a not-for-profit organization) in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
