The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is hosting a free workshop for artists and art teachers, "Safety and Health in the Art Studio," from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 31. The museum is co-sponsoring the workshop with the Worker Institute @ Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and the Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health.

Presenters Nellie J. Brown and Nona McQuay will explore the common health and safety problems in art studios (and classrooms). Topics will include regulations and recommendations on chemical exposure, the routes of exposure to chemicals, and protection and prevention for reducing or eliminating hazards using the hierarchy of controls. Hazards, protection and prevention will be reviewed for arts/materials, including: paints and solvents; sealants; adhesives and glues; charcoal and chalk; inks and markers; photography; ceramics and glazes; sculptures (casts, resins, plaster of Paris); and dyes and mordants.

Brown is the director of workplace health and safety programs for the Worker Institute at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Brown provides on-site training and technical assistance services in a wide range of occupational safety and health matters.

McQuay is the former curator of the Niagara County History Center and a docent at the Castellani Museum. She has been a health and safety specialist for the state Public Employees Federation and an extension associate and occupational health educator for Cornell University - ILR/Workplace Health and Safety Program.

Admission is free, but space is limited to 25 participants. Pre-registration is required. Call Susan Clements at 716-286-8201 to register.
