Annual hunger walk benefits Niagara community

Though much of next week's forecast shows rain, it looks like the sun will shine Saturday, May 3, when Community Missions Inc. hosts its annual Walk for Niagara at Whirlpool State Park.

Around 200 walkers are expected to attend the event, rain or shine, to raise awareness and funds for Niagara County's underserved population.

Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m. and the two-mile walk follows shortly after at 11:15 a.m. The event also includes pre-walk coffee and doughnuts from Tim Hortons, 50/50 raffle, prizes and a light picnic lunch.

Anyone interested in walking is asked to collect pledges and donations in support of their participation. This year there are three ways to walk: as an individual (collecting a minimum of $20), as a student team (collecting a minimum of $100), or as a business team (collecting a minimum of $250). Teams must have at least five walkers.

Pets on leashes are welcome. Event sponsors Blackwinds Pet Supplies and United Healthcare will be site providing information to walkers and their dogs. Other event sponsors include Coldwell Banker and LocalEdge.

Currently, there are 22,426 people struggling economically in Niagara County. Community Missions serves and supports these individuals through programs such as the agency's crisis services, which include the community soup kitchen, food pantry, clothes closet and emergency housing shelter.

In 2013, the mission provided more than 75,000 meals and 10,000 nights of shelter to neglected or abused children and homeless adults. All proceeds from Walk for Niagara will directly benefit these programs, and assist in feeding the hungry and housing the homeless.

For more information, contact Andrea Gray at 716-285-3403, ext. 2225, or [email protected]. Event information and pledge forms are also available online at www.communitymissions.org.
