Merrell Lane, vice chairman of the Niagara Military Affairs Council and a member of the Air Force chief of staff's civic leaders program, recently met with top leaders of the U.S. Air Force at the 2014 Air Force Civic Leader Program Conference in Washington, D.C.

The two-day conference involved discussions, briefings and input from members of the program with the highest-ranking officials of the Air Force, including the newly appointed secretary of the Air Force, Deborah Lee James. One of the many issues discussed was the recently released commission report about future strategies for the Air Force, including the Guard and Reserve.

Among the Air Force leaders Lane met were Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh, Commander of the Air Force Reserve Lt. Gen. James Jackson, Air Force Lt. Gen. Stanley E. Clarke III (who also serves as director of the Air Guard) and Chief Master Sargent of the Air Force James Cody.

"It was an honor to meet and speak with the leadership of the United States Air Force and the National Guard," Lane said. "Most importantly, attending this conference provided me the opportunity to speak in detail with top Air Force and National Guard officials about the critical importance of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station to our region."

The National Guard News Bureau states the AFCLP members serve as key advisers and advocates on Air Force issues and provide timely, relevant information and feedback. Respected in their communities, members foster relationships between the American public and the Air Force through personal contact, speeches and appearances.

The Niagara Military Affairs Council, or NIMAC, is a nonprofit organization that works to support the growth and prosperity of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and its personnel, creating a positive economic impact on the Western New York Community. Founded in 1996 as a result of the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, NIMAC continues to support and promote capital investment by the federal government in the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station by increasing the NFARS' visibility and calling attention to its attributes among key Department of Defense, congressional and military leaders. NIMAC is an apolitical, Hatch Act-compliant organization allowing free communication between NIMAC and military leadership.
