Castellani Art Museum to present Sunday afternoon folk arts series 'Master Makers and Players'

Throughout the spring, the folk arts program of the Castellani Art Museum will host "Master Makers and Players," a series of public lectures, demonstrations, and workshops that further explore the legacy of National Heritage Fellows, and that highlight some exceptional traditional artists living and working in Western New York.

These events are held in conjunction with the exhibition "Extraordinary Ordinary People: American Masters of Traditional Arts" (Feb. 2-June 20). They are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The first program is slated for Sunday, Feb. 23. Dan Ward, curator at the Erie Canal Museum, will give a presentation on "Elizabeth Cotton: Her Artistry and Her Legacy." Admission is free.

Sunday, March 2

"Introduction to Ebru: Turkish Paper Marbling"

Hands-on workshop with Gülen and Ali Yilmaz; 2-4 p.m.

"Exploring the Legacy of America's Masters of Traditional Music"

Audio-visual presentation by Thomas Grant Richardson, ethnomusicologist at Empire State College; 2-4 p.m.

Sunday, April 27

"You Don't Need Feet to Dance"

Director Alan Govenar, 2013; 2-4 p.m.

A documentary film about National Heritage Fellow Sidiki Conde, master djembe drummer living in New York City.

Sunday, May 4

"Introduction to Ikebana: Japanese Floral Art"

Hands-on workshop with Takako Michii, Ikebana master; 1-4 p.m.
