Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has appointed Sarah Obot coordinator of its Niagara Falls community health worker program.

A native of Belgium, Obot holds a master's degree in education from the University of Mons-Hainaut in Belgium. She is the former supervisor of the extended day program at the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club and a former language ambassador in the Niagara University College of Education.

Obot will oversee recently hired community health workers Karen Hoopsick, Towanya Mack and De'Shia Mason.

Community health worker programs provide outreach, education, referral and follow-up, case management, advocacy and home visiting services to women who are at highest risk for poor birth outcomes, particularly low-birth weight and infant mortality. Support is provided during pregnancy and following childbirth.

Funded through the state Department of Health, there are 23 such programs in New York.

Obot will continue to coordinate Project Runway, the Memorial Medical Center program that provides a pathway for drug- and alcohol-free living for young women residing in Niagara.
