Zuckerberg tells Guthrie he never thought they'd be the ones to help connect the world

In a "Today" television exclusive, Facebook's chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg talks to Savannah Guthrie as he celebrates a milestone: the company's 10th anniversary. Zuckerberg told Guthrie he always thought there would be a service that would connect the world, but "he never thought they'd be the ones to help do it."

He added: "When I look back over the last 10 years, one of the questions that I ask myself is, 'Why were we the ones to help do this?' And I think a lot of what it comes down to is, we just cared more."

The interview will air on "Today," Tuesday, Feb. 4. 

In a candid and wide-ranging interview, Zuckerberg reflects on everything from Facebook's rocky IPO rollout to its latest earnings report, security issues, and the future of Facebook. He also talks about turning 30 this year and life with his wife, Priscilla Chan.

An excerpt from the interview follows.

Savannah Guthrie: "It seems like you've always wanted Facebook to be more than just a place to trade your vacation pictures or maybe stalk an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend. But you really seem to want it to change the world.

Mark Zuckerberg: "I remember really vividly, you know, having pizza with my friends a day or two after I opened up the first version of Facebook at my school. And, you know, I was just really excited that we were doing it at one school. And, you know, at the time I thought, 'You know, someone needs to build a service like this for the world.' I always thought that was this incredibly important thing to have happen. But I just never thought that we'd be the ones to help do it. And, you know, when I look back over the last 10 years, one of the questions that I ask myself is 'Why were we the ones to help do this?' And I think a lot of what it comes down to is, we just cared more."
