Mount St. Mary's Hospital will celebrate Heart Month in February with its annual lipid panel screening on Feb. 9, and continuing with a series of events that will culminate with a special educational presentation on Feb. 25.

Activities will begin Feb. 9, from 6-10:30 a.m. in the north lobby of the hospital at 5300 Military Road, with the lipid panel screening. The tests are being conducted by the hospital and will cover cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and LDL. Results will be mailed directly to the home of individual tested. Last year when Mount St. Mary's Hospital conducted its free screening, more than 400 people took part.

As part of the morning, educational programs will be offered by Mount St. Mary's cardiologist Dr. Benjamin Rueda at 8 and 10 a.m. and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. LuJean Jennings at 9 a.m. Rueda will speak on "Heart Risk Factors and Who Should be Treated," while Jennings will speak on "Implantable Cardiac Devices for the Rich, the Famous and the Rest of Us."

A complimentary breakfast will be served throughout the morning.

There will be several stations for testing (no reservations will be taken). Those planning to take the test are reminded this is a fasting test. Individuals should not eat upon arising and prior to this test. For more information, call 716-298-2145.

From Feb. 10-13, the cardiology department at Mount St. Mary's will have a series of displays in the hospital's main (south) lobby featuring information on heart health, diabetes, nutrition, stroke and physical rehabilitation. The displays will be available from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

On Feb. 11-13 the popular "Taking Charge of Diabetes" program will be held from 6-9 p.m. nightly. Presented by Debra Hoffman, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, the program will be held in Room 249. Call 716-298-2297 to register.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, from 6-7 p.m., Mount St. Mary's cardiology and other departments will conduct a mini health fair in the Lower Level Gallagher Center on the Niagara University campus prior to a NU men's basketball game. There will be blood pressure screenings, health information and give-away raffles.

The events conclude Tuesday, Feb. 25, with the presentation "Are Vitamins Good for Your Health?" presented by Rueda. The session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in Room 249.
