Grand Island High School students support Christmas Eve Delivery Project

Sat, Dec 31st 2016 07:00 am

Needy children woke up on Christmas morning with gifts on their stoop thanks to students at Grand Island High School.

Students in the school's Life Skills class, their peer buddies, and Casey's Corner school store raised money and bought gifts for The Christmas Eve Delivery Project, an endeavor that started in West Seneca when a group of people identified needy children in their area and collected toys for them. For 26 years, these anonymous Santas have been delivering gifts on Christmas Eve from 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. to about 35 families and 100 children. Families in need are identified by social workers and a group called Hearts for the Homeless.

This year, GIHS students raised money from sales at Casey's Corner school store to fund part of the shopping excursion. Teacher Melissa Kosmoski said the 12 Life Skills students took $670 from the fundraisers and had fun Dec. 19 in a shopping experience for the less fortunate. Student Tom Botticello said they went to shop at Walmart, Target and the Boulevard Mall, and classmate Mary Szumla added the group went to Red Robin for lunch following the shopping excursion.

The teachers said the work offers Life Skills students an opportunity to become engaged in giving back to the community.
