Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster welcomed local agencies, educators and restaurateurs to City Hall on Nov. 29 to proclaim #GivingTuesday in Niagara Falls.

Following a heavily commercialized long weekend (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday), #GivingTuesday is an opportunity for people to give back to charitable and educational entities. In 2011, it was recognized as such by the United Nations Foundation.

"I love the sentiment of this idea here," Dyster said. "(It's) important to step back at some point and think about the broader meaning of the season."

From the proclamation, Dyster read, in part, "Giving Tuesday is a celebration of philanthropy and volunteerism, inspiring people to give whatever they're able to give, as citizens working together to share commitments, rally for favorite causes, build a stronger community and think outside themselves."

"I appreciate our nonprofit organizations, which make a difference to those in need everyday, and encourage our citizens to join together and give back to the community in any way that is personally meaningful," Dyster added.

Community Missions of Niagara Frontier was one of the agencies recognized. Communications and Development Manager Christian Hoffman said, "We have 10-12 organizations that are all working together to make Niagara better."

American Niagara Hospitality restaurants Rainforest Cafe and TGI Fridays, both located within the Sheraton At The Falls at 300 Third St., and Niagara American Grill, located inside Days Inn At The Falls at 443 Main St., planned to participate in the #GivingTuesday project, and to give back a portion of Tuesday's sales to Community Missions. Panera Bread, Power City Eatery, Submariners, Third Street Retreat and the Village Bake Shoppe (Lewiston) also created campaigns to give back to Community Missions.

Niagara Catholic Jr./Sr. High School (www.niagaracatholic.org/donation) and Niagara University (http://apps.niagara.edu/alumni-engagement/legacy.php), meanwhile, invited alumni to donate on #GivingTuesday. Monies raised were to go toward offsetting student tuition fees.
