Grand Island High School hosted an afternoon workshop session for high school physics teachers from across the state in association with Buffalo State and the New York State Master Teacher Program.
The afternoon started with a tour of the new technology wing at Grand Island High School led by Grand Island technology teachers Carl Koppman and Eric Cohoon. Participants then engaged in production and assembly of several "make-and-take" devices for use in the classroom, including compressed air rocket launchers and mini trebuchets. A demonstration of a full-scale trebuchet and several different air rocket designs were conducted on the front lawn of the high school.
The three-day workshop, "accelerating physics," is part of the state Master Teacher Program, which has a goal of designing and implementing high-quality professional development that engages participants in activities specific to the content area they teach in their classrooms. The 25 participants will return to schools across the state with new teaching materials, lessons and instructional approaches to be put to use this fall.
