Workers at the New York Power Authority's Lewiston Pump Generation Plant reached a milestone in the plant's Life Extension and Modernization (LEM) project, when maintenance and refurbishment work on the turbine unit (pictured) was completed and the unit was returned to service March 20. The work included a new pump turbine, shaft and head covers, along with a refurbished operating ring, guide bearing and wicket gate levers. This marks the third turbine unit to be successfully overhauled under the 10-year LEM, which is now 25 percent complete and on schedule to conclude in 2020.

The plant provides electricity during periods of peak power demand, supplementing the output of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant. The LEM project schedule calls for the overhaul of one pump turbine every eight to nine months, ensuring 11 of the 12 turbine units are available for operation so NYPA can meet its obligations to customers.

The $460 million LEM is consistent with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's emphasis on modernizing the state's electric power system, and is generating millions of dollars in contracts to participating vendors, including nearly 50 New York firms.
