Congressman Brian Higgins announced the University at Buffalo was awarded $348,945 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a nurse traineeship program.

"Skilled nurses are critical to our nation's health care system," Higgins said. "I am grateful that the University at Buffalo has been awarded this funding to help make sure that all students who are dedicated to receiving this advanced training are able to complete their program of study. Western New York will benefit greatly from this investment in the long run."

The grant will be used to provide scholarships to graduate students studying to receive a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Students in the degree program are trained to work with vulnerable and underserved and minority populations

UB School of Nursing Dean Marsha Lewis added, "This is a tremendous opportunity for our adult-gerontology, family and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner students. We anticipate that at least 60 post-BS to DNP students will benefit from these funds as they prepare to become primary care nurse practitioners."
