Students at West Street Elementary School recently learned one of life's more important lessons - caring for people in their community.  The students organized a pancake breakfast to raise funds to help 17-year-old Nathan Brundage, a Niagara-Wheatfield High School junior who recently was diagnosed with an aggressive, growing brain tumor. Seven years ago, Nathan was a student at West Street.

Fourth-grader Derek Carr heard about Nathan and wanted to do something. With the assistance of his teacher, Karl Heilemann, fourth- and fifth-grade students were mobilized to hold a pancake breakfast, making posters, selling tickets, and cooking and serving pancakes. Teachers in the school donated money to help pay for supplies. In addition, the Niagara Wheatfield Teacher's Association, through the Local Action Program, donated $300 to help Nathan.

More than 300 students and teachers attended the breakfast.  A total of $2,050 was raised.

These funds will be donated to a benefit that will be held on Saturday, April 5, at Lewiston No. 2 Volunteer Fire Co., 1705 Saunders Settlement Road, Lewiston, from 2 to 7 p.m.  Nathan is a volunteer firefighter at Lewiston No. 2.
