Nominations are open for the 14th annual Andrew John Zuccari Memorial Scholarship award of $1,000 for a graduating senior in the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District's Class of 2012.

The scholarship was founded in memory of Andrew Zuccari, a 14-year-old N-W student, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1995. His parents, Paul and Luanne Zuccari, and the scholarship committee have awarded scholarships of up to $1,000 each year since 1999, which was the year Andrew would have graduated if he had lived.

"The criteria for nomination is a little different than the usual academic or financial need based scholarships. This is designed for the student who displays the qualities our son exemplified, including kindness, compassion, a willingness to help and a sense of humor used to enrich the lives of others. These kinds of kids can certainly fall into the academically excellent or those with a financial need categories, but that's not part of the criteria," said Luanne Zuccari. "Basically, our scholarship winners are examples of just all-around good kids with good character."

The scholarship is for students who are college-bound or with plans to enter training or educational programs beyond high school. Nomination forms are available in the Niagara-Wheatfield High School Guidance Department or by calling 731-9993. The deadline for nominations in May 1.

Since 1999, the scholarship committee has awarded more than $25,000 in scholarship awards.

"This has proven to be a really nice way to honor Andy's memory, and it has given us the opportunity to meet some wonderful, extraordinary young people," said Zuccari.
