McMahon signals run for re-election

Town Supervisor Peter McMahon has announced his candidacy for re-election.

McMahon is a Grand Island native. He and his 10 brothers and sisters grew up in a new subdivision build by Sears Roebuck on Love Road in 1942. He attended Charlotte Sidway School and Bishop Fallon High School.

Peter served five years in the U.S. Coast Guard with duty stations in New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida and Hawaii. He married Mary Mucci while in the Coast Guard in Miami. They have three grow sons, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

McMahon started working for the Principal Financial Group in 1966 when he returned from his military service. When he retired in 1997, he was the general manager for Upstate New York.

He was elected Town Supervisor in November of 1997 and began serving in the office on Jan. 1, 1998. During his tenure as supervisor, he has led the town through department consolidations and reorganizations, which have saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. He instituted a townwide fleet maintenance program and eliminated take-home cars for employees and officials.

The town currently controls capital expenses by using a five-year capital plan. The goal of the plan is to maintain a certain level of debt service year to year. This will result in a smaller percentage of taxes going to debt service as the Island grows.

McMahon has been an active member of the Grand Island Fire Co. for more than 50 years, serving as the fire chief from 1982 to 1988. He also has been co-chair of Grand Island's Relay For Life and been active in the development of the new Miracle League Field.
