Longtime Pendleton native Patrick Murphy will be candidate for Niagara County Clerk this year.

"I think the county clerk's office needs a fresh set of eyes, and some new ideas," Murphy said. "The current county clerk has been in office for 16 years. During that time, we've seen Niagara County taxpayers pay the second-highest property taxes in the country. My opponent has become an entrenched, career politician, and has not done his part to offer solutions to the high tax rate, or develop enough cost-cutting measures."

Murphy is the son of the late Matthew J. Murphy, a longtime New York state assemblyman from Lockport. He is the endorsed candidate of the Niagara County Democratic Party.

He is a group benefits consultant with the Stahlka Agency of Williamsville, and has been employed in the health insurance industry for the last 20 years.

"I plan to run the county clerk's office with a private sector, businesslike approach," Murphy said. "Doing more with less is no longer an option - it is a mandate. I believe everyone in public service should work towards increasing productivity and reducing the cost of government."

Murphy also pledges to make county government more user-friendly for taxpayers, by expanding access to the services offered by the county clerk, including the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

"My goal is move our customers online, and not keep them in line," Murphy said. "We can do this by better utilizing internet access for county clerk records, and improving the clerk's website for taxpayers to answer questions and provide forms whenever possible."

Murphy is a 1978 graduate of the former DeSales Catholic High School in Lockport and a graduate of Niagara County Community College. In 1989 he received a B.S. in business management from D'Youville College in Buffalo.
