Sabres Miracle League Field, an adaptive baseball diamond in Veterans Park for children and young adults with disabilities, is nearing completion. The complex, an effort of the Miracle League of Grand Island and Western New York, is located behind the Grand Island Memorial Library on Bedell Road and includes a shelter and washroom facilities. Workers laid down the blacktop for the diamond this week.

Progress on the new adaptive baseball diamond for disabled ballplayers is entering a seventh inning stretch.

Visitors to the Veterans Park location of the diamond off Bedell Road can see the playing surface for the Sabres Miracle League Field taking shape, with ancillary amenities rising from the dirt. Work crews for the Miracle League of Grand Island and Western New York finished on Tuesday the blacktop, the underside of the playing surface. According to Town Supervisor Peter McMahon, who stopped by the site on Tuesday, the blacktop will cure for 30 days, after which the work crews will lay on top a rubberized field surface. After the surface is laid down, it's ready for use in short order.

"They have a lot of work left to do, but you can visually see what it's going to look like now that it's paved," McMahon said.

When the field was built, the town removed the volleyball courts, which received plenty of use, McMahon said. The town relocated the new volleyball courts, which should return to service this week.
