At the Monday evening meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education, trustees reviewed the $51,859,079 proposed budget for the 2011-12 school year. The budget, with its estimated tax increase of 1.7 percent, will go to public vote on Tuesday, May 17.
Superintendent of Schools Robert Christmann told trustees that the $51 million-plus figure and the tax increase cannot go higher than what is proposed.
"This is the maximum expenditure," he said. He also told the board that adjustments have already been made in the foreign language and music programs.
In the original proposal, French classes were to be cut for seventh-graders. After looking at the sign-ups for seventh grade French this week, administrators decided to offer three classes of seventh grade French for the 2011-12 year. In addition, with declining enrollment in general music classes, a 0.6 teaching position for music may be cut. This would not affect the widely popular instrumental, string and other music offerings in the district.
