The Porter citizens environmental group Residents for Responsible Government announced this week it was awarded a $5,500 grant from Freshwater Future. Geared for the protection of the watershed in Niagara County, the $5,500 grant is to help RRG organize community opposition to any expansion of the Chemical Waste Management hazardous waste landfill in the Town of Porter, said Wendy Swearingen, RRG president.

Freshwater Future builds effective, community-based citizen action to protect and restore the water quality of the Great Lakes basin. It works toward this goal by providing financial assistance, communications and networking assistance and technical assistance to citizens and grassroots watershed groups throughout the Great Lakes basin. Grassroots organizations and citizen initiatives in both the U.S. and Canada are eligible for funding through Freshwater Future's grant programs.

"We are happy to be able to fund such worthy projects to protect the lakes, rivers, wetlands and groundwater in the Great Lakes region," said Jill Ryan, executive director of Freshwater Future. "I am continually amazed by the passion and energy local communities bring to ensuring the current and future health of their water resources."

RRG states it's mission is to inform and empower residents on the hazards of toxic waste in the region, especially the chemical and radiological materials in and around the Niagara Falls Storage Site and CWM, which operates in the middle of the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works, a major WWII munitions production and radiological handling and storage site.

"The grant from Freshwater Future will help accomplish this mission by enabling RRG to provide accurate and useful information to the community regarding these hazards and what actions need to be taken to halt the proposed expansion of CWM's toxic landfill with its inevitable detrimental impact on our environment," said Swearingen.
