Obit -- Dolores C. Albertsson

Dolores C. Albertsson passed away on Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011.

She was born and raised in Cheektowaga by German immigrant parents. She spent summer months on Grand View Bay in Angola and graduated from Amherst Central High School.

Albertsson worked closely with her father in the family commercial construction company, which built many schools, churches and commercial properties in Western New York. On Grand Island, they built Kaegebein Elementary School, Trinity United Methodist Church and the addition at Sidway Elementary School, among others. Albertsson wrote the letter that was sealed in the box inside the cornerstone at Kaegebein in 1952.

She met her beloved husband, Jon G. Albertsson, an Icelandic national, by chance on Memorial Day weekend in 1954. They married in July 1955 and moved to East Lansing, Mich., while her husband completed his mechanical engineering degree at Michigan State University.

They moved to Akureyri, Iceland, in June 1957 to fulfill her husband's scholarship requirement, and then returned to the U.S. in October 1962. They settled on Grand Island to raise three children.

Albertsson was active in PTA and the Girl Scouts and enrolled in many art classes, including ceramics and silk-screen printing. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Niagara Falls Country Club for 28 years. She loved international travel and spoke three languages (German, English and Icelandic).

Dolores was wife of the late Jon G. Albertsson for 42 years (until he passed away in April 1998); the mother of Candice K. Albertsson, Karolina Albertsson and Jon G. (Laurie) Albertsson Jr.; the grandmother of Amanda N. Albertsson, Christopher and Kristy Pace; the great-grandmother of Alteriadawn Pace; and the daughter of the late Moritz and Berta (Wenninger) Allgaier.

Visitation was held Monday Feb. 21, at the Kaiser Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at St. Stephen's Old Church. Interment was in Assumption Cemetery, Grand Island.
