For two nights in December, visitors to Old Fort Niagara will experience the holidays as they were celebrated in early America. Historical characters will bring Christmas past alive with 18th and 19th century holiday recipes and portrayals of colonial-era people. The high point of the evening will be a traditional "feu de joie" (firing of joy), a nighttime musket and cannon salute.

Programs will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 18. The historic French Castle (built in 1726) will be illuminated entirely by candles, as will the fort's parade ground. The fort's log trading post will serve as a colonial tavern complete with hot beverages and period music.

The award-winning Youngstown Garden Club will decorate the castle for the holidays. National Garden Clubs Inc. named the club as first-place winner in the category of "Decoration of Historic Building" for the club's holiday decorating of the French Castle in 2008.

Tickets to "The Castle by Candlelight" are $8 per person, and will be available at the door. Guests are asked to dress for the weather, wear walking footwear, and bring a flashlight.
