North Lake News for Nov. 20

The Newfane Business Association invites area residents to take a drive out to the Newfane area along the lakeshore and check out a number of events over coming days and weeks. Included are:

• On Saturday, Nov. 20, Shoppe on Main, 2714 Main St., Newfane, will host author David Brown, who will sign his murder mystery "The Elusive Chauffeur" from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 21, noon to 2 p.m., author Jan Nichols will sign "Chicken Soup for the Soul, Devotional Stories for Mothers" to which she contributed. Also from 2 to 4 p.m. children's author Ron Mazzarella will sign his new release "There's a Whale in the Canal." Call the Shoppe at 778-5273 for more information.

• The Olcott Community Ladies Auxiliary will hold a vendor's fair on Sunday, Nov. 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Olcott Fire Hall, 1691 Lockport Olcott Road. Admission is free and more than 20 vendors will be on hand with jewelry, purses, wine and much more. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and there will be a basket raffle and 50/50 split.

• The Newfane Holiday Light Up, an annual Christmas celebration of this lakeshore community, opens Friday, Dec. 3, with a parade at 5:30 p.m., featuring Santa. Parade participants are still being sought. Interested individuals, groups or organizations should call Tammy Dodge at 778-8558 ext. 2232.

Sponsored by the Newfane Business Association, Budweys, First Niagara Bank, the Newfane Lions and the Lewiston-Porter Sentinel, Newfane's Holiday Light Up features a number of family-fun holiday activities, including a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, servings of cookies, cocoa and cider at the gazebo and visits with Santa. Local 4-Hers are expected to visit with miniature horses, which will serve as a children's petting place while they wait to visit with Santa. Free wagon rides will be available along with free refreshments.

Also featured will be a Candy Cane Lane at Newfane United Methodist Church, and the Grace Bible Church will again hold its inspiring Living Nativity presentation on Dec. 3, 5, 10 and 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This is a 30-minute guided walk through the Christmas story and beyond.

Admission and parking to Newfane's Holiday Light Up are free. Visitors are invited to take a shuttle from the Community Center at Newfane Town Hall, 2737 Main St., to the church for easy travel.

• Join in an old-fashioned carol-sing at the Van Horn Mansion in Newfane on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m. Featured will be a bell choir from the Newfane United Methodist Church and holiday treats in the dining room.

• Christmas at the School House at the corner of Carmen and Seamen Road will be held Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until sold out. Featured will be a ham or roast beef dinner with potatoes, vegetables, a roll, apple crisp and a beverage at a cost of $7.50 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under. Also offered will be a 50/50 split, door prizes, baked goods and live Christmas music by Paula Phillips.

• The Mobile Safety-Net team, a basic human needs initiative supported by the John Oishei Foundation, will offer a series of community resource events, featuring on-site health and human services providers at the Community Center at Newfane Town Hall, 2737 Main St. Dates and times are Monday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event is geared to those in need of financial assistance, having health questions, in danger of losing their home or having other pressing problems.
