The Erie Canal Discovery Center is hosting the annual Erie Canal Poster Contest on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. to commemorate the 1825 opening of the Erie Canal.

The art contest is open to students residing in Niagara County and enrolled in high school. Younger students are encouraged to take part in an Erie Canal Coloring Contest. Additional information on the events is available at the Discovery Center or online at www.ErieCanalDiscoveryCenter.com. The deadline to return entries is 4 p.m., on Oct. 9. This is a free, public event and event planners would like to encourage families, friends, as well as art and canal enthusiasts to join in the celebration at the Erie Canal Discovery Center to recognize the accomplishments of these young artists and to help commemorate the 185th anniversary of the opening of the grand Erie Canal.

In addition to the art contest, the center will host a take-out Chiavetta's chicken barbecue Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinners are $8 and include dessert. Discount presale tickets are available at the Discovery Center, 24 Church St., and the History Center, 215 Niagara St., Lockport. For more information, call 439-0431.
