Individuals who are managing health conditions at home (such as diabetes) can dispose of their personal syringes and sharps at Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center, 5300 Military Road, Lewiston, at no charge.

Syringes and sharps must be in a rigid, puncture-resistant, unbreakable container, secured with a screw top and labeled. The container must have "biohazard" or "contains sharps" written on the outside using a waterproof marker directly on the container or on masking tape on the container. Examples of plastic containers with tight fitting screw tops are laundry detergent containers and bleach bottles. The larger the opening, the safer it is to store the sharps. Glass or coffee containers are not acceptable. Inappropriate containers will not be accepted.

Household sharps are accepted in the Environmental Services Department between 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. They may also be dropped off at the main information areas of the north and south lobbies.

For more information, call the Environmental Services Department at 298-2194.
