Summer children’s programs offered Lewiston Public Library Niagara Wheatfield Tribune, June 25, 2009 The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., announces the following programs taking place at the library this summer. In keeping with libraries across the state, this year’s theme is “Be Creative @ Your Library.” •Events get underway at the library Wednesday, July 1, with a kickoff concert featuring Nan Hoffman. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with face painting, T-shirt decorating and snacks. Hoffman will start her concert at 6:30 p.m. Registration packets will be available for lap readers and independent readers. Children are invited to bring a T-shirt (100 percent cotton requested) for decorating. Special Programs •”I’ve Got Rhythm” with Karima Amin on Monday, July 6, at 5:30 p.m. A retired public school teacher, storyteller, author, and justice advocate from Buffalo, Amin is the author of “Brer Rabbit and Friends” and “Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Friends.” Children are invited to make rhythm sticks and participate in an interactive story time. •“Ham It Up with Kids On The Block,” Tuesday, July 14, at 2 p.m. Featured will be a puppet-troupe promoting the awareness, education, and acceptance of individual differences, sponsored by the Museum of disABILITY History, a project of People Inc. •“Now You See It” with Rivershore artists Monday, July 20, at 6 p.m. Featured will be the artists from Rivershore and their creations, and visitors are invited create some art of their own. •“Now You See It” with Ron Cain the Magician, Monday, July 27, at 6 p.m. Meet professional magician and wizard Ron Cain, whose magic shows and classes bring fantasy and fun to audiences of all ages. •“Dance and Move” with the Lewiston Dance Center and Presti Martial Arts Studio on Monday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m. The performers will demonstrate some of their skills and show participants how to dance and move. •“Free Play at the Library” on Monday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. Offered will be many different creative centers for visitors to try, including: “What Can You Do With A Cardboard Box,” “Squiggle Line Drawings,” “Creative Writing,” “Collage Making” and “Water Painting.” •Area youngsters are invited to come to the library’s Summer Reading Talent Show on Monday, Aug. 17, at 6 p.m. Registration is required and approval of talent is a must before the show. Summer Visitors •The Niagara County Mounted Patrol Unit will be bringing horses to the library on Wednesday, July 8, at 1 p.m. A division of the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department, the unit is assigned to assist regular deputies at public functions, concert series and mall patrols. •The Lewiston Police K-9 unit and Radar the police dog will visit on Wednesday, July 15, at 1 p.m. Learn how police dogs are trained to assist law enforcement. •The United States Coast Guard will visit on Wednesday, July 22, at 1 p.m. Members of local squadron will bringing along a special guest - Coasty the Coast Guard boat - and will discuss search and rescue and the other duties of the service. •The New York Power Authority will present Timon and Pumbaa Safety Smart Goes Green on Wednesday, July 29, at 1 p.m. to teach children how to make more informed safety choices for themselves and their environment. •Members of Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. will visit on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. with their truck and gear. Featured will be presentations on the basics of preventing fires at home and what to do in case there is a fire. •The New York Power Authority will present Kato’s Electrical Safety Video Adventure on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. Featured will be the basics regarding the production, transmission and distribution of electricity and a first-hand look at safety equipment used by line workers. Ways to stay safe will be reviewed and young visitors will learn about the nine common indoor and outdoor electrical safety hazards. Weekly Story Time •Toddler Story Hour for infants and toddlers age 6 to 35 months old meets Wednesdays, July 8, 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5 and 12 at 10:30 a.m. Call or stop by to register. •Story time for toddlers and children age 2 to 5 years meets Thursdays, July 9, 16, 23, 30, and Aug. 6 and 13 at 10:30 a.m. Call or stop by to register. •NIOGA storyteller Erin McCarthy will be in the children’s room on Tuesdays, July 7, 21, and Aug. 4 at 10:30 a.m. She is sponsored by the Grigg-Lewis Foundation and will be entertaining children with stories, fun and crafts. Library hours are Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday, noon to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Saturdays during the summer and will reopen in the fall.
