Roemer selected as clerk for U.S. District Court

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, November 15, 2008

Chief Judge Richard J. Arcara of the U.S. District Court, Western District of New York, this week announced that Youngstown resident Michael J. Roemer has been selected as the clerk of the court for the U.S. District Court in Buffalo and Rochester. Roemer, who has served as confidential law clerk to Chief Judge Arcara for the past 14 years, succeeds Rodney Early, who is retiring at the end of January after 32 years of federal service.

"Mike was the unanimous choice among the judges to take over the job as clerk of court," said Judge Arcara. "He brings with him a wealth of experience in the federal court system. Although I'm sorry to lose him as my confidential law clerk, he will make a great chief executive officer for our court."

The clerk of court is responsible for all the court's business affairs, including case-related administration and record-keeping, the collection and disbursement of all court funds, personnel management, jury administration, space and budget management and technical support services. In addition, as the court clerk, Roemer will act as the court's point person during construction of the $123 million courthouse in Buffalo.

The local federal judicial court, one of 94 in the U.S., covers the 17 western-most counties of New York state. The court sits in both Buffalo and Rochester.

Roemer grew up in Lewiston and attended Lewiston-Porter Senior High School. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers. A magna cum laude graduate of the Cornell Law School, he previously worked for the law firm of Jones, Day in Cleveland.

"I look forward to the challenge," said Roemer. "I thank the judges for their support and will work hard to uphold the court's reputation as one of the finest in the country."

Roemer lives in Youngstown with his wife, Jean, and two daughters Kristen and Amy.
