The Niagara County Fair is under way.

The family-oriented event, which includes 4-H exhibits, horse shows, livestock shows, a carnival, displays by local merchants and a wide variety of entertainment, takes place on the Niagara County Fairgrounds, just north of the City of Lockport on Route 78 (Lake Road).

Tractors and More

The antique tractor and equipment display runs from Wednesday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 3. A parade is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31. Fair planners are seeking new participants and will help in getting equipment to the fair.

“Tractor games” will be held in the horse show ring at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Events such as the barrel roll, egg hitch and slow race will be held.

Exhibitors participating in the parade or displaying equipment should assemble in the area near the main gate starting at 6 p.m. July 31. Prizes will be offered for the best paint job, oldest tractor and best historical costume.

A new fun event will be added to this year’s fair program – a tractor operators’ contest, from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at an open-air course layout just north of the Coliseum. Tractor-pulled two-wheel trailer and four-wheel wagon driving through an obstacle course is timed and scored.

Chicken Barbecue

Perhaps the longest-running chicken barbecue in Niagara County, the Niagara County Fair Chicken Barbecue will be offered from noon until it’s sold out on Thursday, July 31. Cost is $8 for chicken, corn on the cob, coleslaw, beverage, roll and butter. Child’s portion is $6. Take-out is available at the main gate.

The 1,500 chicken halves will be cooked by chef Dennis Smith of Wilson, Matt Costello of Gasport and Leon and Julie Thompson of Burt along with dozens of volunteers. Entertainment is provided in the adjacent North Entertainment Stage.

Crafts Galore

Crafters will display and sell their products July 30 through Aug. 3 at the fair.

Amateur Wine Makers

The Niagara County Fair will once again feature an amateur wine makers’ contest. Entries are due by 5 p.m. July 31, with judging taking place on Friday and awards followed by a free tasting from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2

In the early 1980s, the Niagara County Fair Amateur Wine Makers’ Contest was started by the DeMaison family of Sanborn. Over time, the contest was discontinued and restarted by local winemaker, Tom Chiappone in the 1990s. This year, the event, known as the Western New York Amateur Wine Makers’ Contest will be chaired by Don DeMaison.

The contest is open to Niagara and surrounding counties. Entries are $4 per bottle and are limited to one entry per class per person. They may be dropped off from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport, and the Trott Access Center, 1001 11th St., A255, Niagara Falls. They may also be dropped off at Chiappone Cellars Winery, 3401 Murphy Road, Newfane. Call 433-9463 for times. Also, entries may be taken to Niagara Traditions Home Brewing Supplies, 1296 Sheridan Drive, Kenmore, during store hours.

Bike Show

The Niagara County Fair Bike Show will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Ride a motorcycle and get in free. Peoples’ Choice trophies will be handed out at 7 p.m.

Karaoke Competition

The finale of the Karaoke Competition is 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 2. Three winners from the previous three days of the fair will compete.

Bring Your Old Cell Phones

Don’t throw your used cell phones and batteries in the landfill – bring them to the Niagara County Fair. A collection box will be located in the Administration Building. Your old cell phone will be turned into cash to support the 4-H Fashion Revue.

The Cave

The Trailblazers 4-H club project, “The Cave,” will feature a nocturnal display in which 4-H members created an educational environment of night loving creatures found in your own back yard. Come and explore the wonderful and mysterious world of the critters that are at home in the dark.
