The Lew-Port softball Lady Lancers have kicked off its 2008 season and so far appear well on their way. Their current overall record stands 3-7 and their NFL record at 1-3.

Head Coach Justalene Olson expressed optimism as she discussed how the season has gone so far compared to her pre-season expectations.

Olson also stressed the team’s hitting has become a large part of the team’s game. “Our hitting has been extremely well. When the top of the order isn’t doing well the bottom picks it up, and when the bottom isn’t doing well, the top has stepped up.”

Some top bats for the Lady Lancers in the early going include junior catcher JaneAnne LePage, junior pitcher and infielder Carly Knight, and center fielder Katherine Petrozzi. Leading the team on the mound has been Knight and Megan Cuda.

This year’s infield has also been solid, with LePage behind the dish and Knight on the mound, but a pleasant surprise has been discovered with two eighth graders. Both Cuda and Ryleigh Fitzgerald have stepped up and played very well. In the outfield, Petrozzi has provided the backbone.

When asked on what the team could improve on Coach Olson stressed their ability to finish games off. “We just need to get over the hump and finish games off on top,” she said.

Pointing out how this year’s team is very different than the previous years, Olson continued, “This team unlike any other, has been working year-round, and this will be our season to turn it around and earn respect – that’s been the team’s motto.”

While the Lady Lancers appear to be driving in the right direction, it will be up to the girls on game night to get the job done.
