Porter DPW informs on pickups

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, April 5, 2008

It’s getting time for some spring-cleaning up in Porter.

With that in mind, the Town of Porter Department of Public Works informs that brush pickups begin on Monday, April 21, and that a town-wide pick-up will occur on April 21 and 22. Starting on May 5, regularly scheduled pick-ups will take place:

•On the first Monday of each month for those areas west of Lutts Road.

•On the third Monday of each month for those areas east of Lutts Road.

DPW Superintendent Scott Hillman reports the brush clearing services are intended for homeowners only. “This service is for reasonable and routine homeowner tree trimming,” says Hillman, adding that it does not include trees in wooded areas behind homes.

“We do not clear or extend lots for builders or private owners,” he says. “If you utilize the services of a contractor, he is responsible for clean up of the trimmings.”

He notes that branches intended for pickup must be no larger than three inches in diameter. In addition all branches should be piled as neatly as possible; cut ends facing the road, as close as is safely possible, and that piles should not exceed waist-level in height. “This enables crews to pick them up quicker and easier. We do not go onto private property. Please do not request us to do so,” he adds.

Further, Hillman requests that any branches piled roadside for pickup be free of any roots and dirt. “We do not pick up rocks, stumps, leaves, lawn sweepings, twigs, vines, rubbish, etc. Please do not put these items out with your branches. We will not pick them up and they could pose a great danger to the men and equipment.”

Regarding pickups of refrigerators and freezers, Hillman informs collections will continue on the second Monday of each month, will be limited to those appliances. “A licensed technician must remove the Freon; the certification sticker must be attached to the appliance and the doors removed before pickup,” says Hillman.

Those with questions on brush pickups are asked to contact the Highway Department at 791-3831, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Requests for refrigerator or freezer pickups should also be directed to the above Highway Department phone number.
