Halloween on the Island

Grand Island Dispatch,
November 2, 2007

Kelsey Hayden, with sabre, and Lauren Kucharski wandered the graveyard on East Colonial Drive on Halloween night awaiting trick-or-treaters.

“It’s just a zombie graveyard,” said cemetery caretaker Bill Knight, left, wandering in his display on Love Road. “Kids get a kick out of this every year here.”
Knight and Sam Stern have been putting on elaborate holiday displays for 20 years, 17 in Baltimore and the last three since moving to the Island. Neighborhood children look forward to their Halloween decorations every October.
“Each year I add something different to it,” Knight said. “The kids love it. The kids keep saying it’s sweet.”

Lauren Kucharski, Scott Gorenflo and Kelsey Hayden welcomed trick-or-treaters to the Gorenflo’s front yard, where a large pirate ship was anchored. The display included sound effects and shipmates Kucharski and Hayden handing out candy. Gorenflo and his wife, Gail, put on a display each year. This year’s display included a pirate theme and took three days to create. Last year, Gorenfl o arose from a coffin dressed as Dracula to give candy to children. “It’s great scaring older kids,” Gorenflo said.
