Roses for Rosanna

Grand Island Dispatch, November 23, 2007

More than 700 people showed their support for Rosanna Russell in her fight against cancer of the esophagus by attending a fundraiser in October at the Sandy Beach Yacht Club.

The strong response for the Grand Island mother of two and the Roses for Rosanna benefi t heartened those closest to her. More than 500 tickets were sold for the event, many to people who had not seen Russell in years.

“There were people there we haven’t seen since childhood,” Russell’s sister Theresa Giambra said. Friends of Russell from the Grand Island High School Class of 1983, and co-workers from her days working at the old Bells Market attended, Giambra said.

“It was just unbelievable the number of people who came for it,” Rosanna’s brother Dave Russell said.

Russell, left, is a lifelong resident of Grand Island and the mother of Rosalie, 12, and Anthony, 16.

The benefi t included basket raffl es, four bands, three bounce houses and a dunk tank.

Russell was diagnosed with cancer in June and underwent fi ve weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. After surgery, Russell was handwriting thank you notes before she could even talk.

“I don’t think she realizes what a source of inspiration she is. She just amazes me with her courage and her strength,” Giambra said. “Even in her weakest moment, she never complained.” Instead she acknowledged
that others have it worse than her.

More and more, so many cancer patients are, like Russell, fi nding a cure after treatment.

Giambra said her sister is a strong person, always concerned with the welfare of others, as evidenced by her career working with physically and mentally handicapped persons in group homes and her years teaching religious education at St. Stephen.
