Lewiston Police announce school safety initiatives

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, September 1, 2007

The school year for students in the Lewiston-Porter School District and at area schools gets under way on Wednesday, Sept. 5, and Lewiston Police are advising motorists they’ll be out in force, making sure “our children” arrive at school safely. Police Chief Chris Salada, shown at left with Interim Lew-Port District Superintendent Don Rappold, informs that effective Wednesday, speed limits in front of the Lew-Port Creek Road campus are dropping from 45 mph to 35 mph during student transportation hours – from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, speed limits have dropped on Creek Road from Ridge Road to Pletcher Road, from 50 mph to 45 mph. “Strict enforcement of the New York state Vehicle and Traffic Laws specifically pertaining to school and school bus safety will be strictly adhered to throughout Lewiston. Lewiston police take school and school bus safety very seriously,” Salada said, adding he has instructed Lewiston officers to enforce these laws vigorously. He reminds drivers, including truck drivers in the area, to watch for “school zones” and abide by the speed limits. “Drivers are also reminded to use caution around school buses, and that the law requires drivers to stop when the buses’ red lights are flashing to let the children on and off the bus,” Salada said. Violators will be prosecuted.
