N-W schools praised by state

Niagara Wheatfield Tribune, July 5, 2007

Six schools in the Niagara-Wheatfield School District have been commended by the State Education Department for gains in academic achievement.

State Education Commissioner Richard P. Mills wrote the commendation letters and encouraged each of the school principals to “celebrate your achievement and to continue implementing strategies to support high performance and to close the gap.”

Tuscarora Elementary School has received commendation from the state Board of Regents and the State Education Department as one of the state’s 226 “rapidly improving” public and charter schools.

Receiving praise as being among the state’s “high-performing/gap closing” schools are: Edward Town Middle School, Colonial Village Elementary, West Street Elementary, Errick Road Elementary and Niagara-Wheatfield High School. The five schools met all applicable state standards for English language arts and math. The schools also achieved adequate yearly progress, for two successive years, in English, math and science.

NWHS and Errick Road Elementary also were honored for achieving adequate yearly progress in graduation rate during both 2004-05 and 2005-06.
