Burkhart, Rockwood win Dollars for Scholars

Grand Island Dispatch, July 13, 2007

Juliana Burkhart and Travis Rockwood were each awarded $500 through the Grand Island chapter of the Dollars for Scholars organization. The scholarships were presented by Dollars for Scholars President Jim Sharpe, Vice President Joanne Kud and Scholarship Chairperson Bev Kinney.

The Dollars for Scholars program is a non-profit, volunteer organization that aims to help deserving students meet the high costs of post-secondary education.

Burkhart will be attending the State University at Buffalo in September as a University Honors Scholar. For her post-graduate studies, she hopes to attend the UB School of Dentistry with a specialty in orthodontics.

Rockwood will be attending Niagara University in September. He will be majoring in computer and information science, with a minor in computer crime. He intends to specialize in computer security to combat cyber-terrorism and prevent hackers from electronically stealing or compromising companies’ data.

The scholarships were awarded to Burkhart and Rockwood on June 29 at the Grand Island Holiday Inn during the Blues Root concert and fund-raiser for Dollars for Scholars.

Funds for Grand Island student scholarships come from the support of local businesses, service organizations and individuals, and are intended to nurture the bright young minds of the Grand Island community and help them succeed in reaching their goal of a college education.
