The Grand Island U-17 Pumas lost a hard-fought battle in the championship game of this year’s edition of the AIM Soccer tournament in Amherst over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

To get to the championship game the Pumas had three preliminary games, in which they went 0-1-2, before beating the Livonia Sharpshooters 2-1 in the semifinal game. Goals were scored by Jenna Hutzler and Jamie Raepple.

The Player of the Match honors were awarded to Jamie Raepple, Sarah Lefevre, Jessica Mysliwiec and Maria Buyer for the Pumas.

The Pumas met the Hamburg Monarchs in the championship game. The Monarchs went up 2-0 in the first half and, shortly after halftime, increased their lead to 3-0 on a direct kick. From that point forward the Pumas took control. Jessica Oyer scored on a penalty kick and Jamie Raepple scored from Lefevre for the Pumas. Grand Island pressed hard for the tying goal, but couldn’t score the equalizer.

Jeannie Taylor and Sara Wilczak were guest players for the Pumas.

The Pumas are sponsored by NOCO, Rocky’s Island Pizzeria and Designer Sportswear.
