Lewiston Family Spring Fling next Saturday

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, April 21, 2007

Here’s a sure sign of spring – despite all that ice still clogging the lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario.

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department has announced plans for its 12th annual Lewiston Family Spring Fling, which will take place Sunday, April 29, at Marilyn Toohey Park, behind the Village Red Brick on North Fourth Street, from 1 to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). Sponsored by the Village of Lewiston, it’s a cost-free, real family event for all ages. And Lewiston residents as well as non- residents are invited.

Activities include:

•The one-mile Lewiston Kiwanis and Lewiston Service Guild Race for children, age 15 and under. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the race gets under way at 12:30 p.m. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the winners.

•A Sidewalk Art Contest, with a theme of “My Favorite Animal” begins at 1 p.m. and is open to children of all ages.

•Into b-ball? Try the hot shot contest – a basketball competition open to participants from age 6 to 60-plus. Tip-off is at 1:30 p.m. Also look for players from the Niagara University men’s basketball squad, who will be on hand to mingle with visitors.

•Slapshot Street Hockey, featuring members of the NU hockey team runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

•At 2 p.m. there will be a Welcome Wagon cup stacking competition, open to children and adults. And at 2:30 there’s the Oreo cookie-stacking contest for adults.

That’s not all. A Chinese auction will be offered, featuring such goodies as a Jim Kelly autographed football, tickets for the Whirlpool Jet Boat, Old Fort Niagara, Artpark and more.

For the little ones, there will be a Bounce-n-Around on site, along with pony rides and a petting zoo. A climbing wall is available for the older kids, but a parent must be present for their child to participate.

Hot dogs and drinks will be served free of charge; families are asked to bring a dish to pass. Entertainment for the afternoon will feature music provided by Asylum Productions.

Sounds like a fun affair to area families to check out. Best of all, it’s free.
