HSBC-sponsored team wins soccer tourney

Grand Island Dispatch, March 30, 2007


Grand Island soccer players, sponsored by HSBC Bank, won the NAIA Houghton College Indoor Soccer Tournament on March 3. The team included, front row, from left: Alicia Barnaby, Alexa Amato, Catie Hilliard and Kristin Wegrzyn. In back, from left: Allie Weiser, Nicole Fischer, Sam Drexelius, Carly Snyder, Casey Carminati, and Coach Dave Bowman. In the front page photo, Barnaby is pictured with Bowman as she shows the plaque she was given after she was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Grand Island Lady Vikings placed second at the NAIA Houghton College Indoor Soccer Tournament on Saturday, March 3.

The team was sponsored by the Grand Island branch of HSBC Bank. They extended their thanks to Mike Samland and the rest of the branch for their support of Vikings soccer.

The Vikings (HSBC) went home with a record of 4-2 and defeated the Arkport and Livonia team whose varsity programs just earned New York state championship titles. The Vikings (HSBC) scored 14 goals in their six games and allowed only 7.

Scoring for the Vikings (HSBC) were Alicia Barnaby with 5 goals, Catie Hilliard with 4 goals, Carly Snyder with 3 goals, Alexa Amato with 1 goal, and Sam Drexelius with 1 goal. Playing solid defense for the Vikings (HSBC) were Nicole Fischer, Casey Carminati, Kristin Wegrzyn, and Allie Weiser. Weiser and Wegrzyn made some key saves in goal during the tournament.

Barnaby was named to the six-player all-tournament team out of a field of approximately 144 players.
