Trio of Vikings set track marks

Three members of the Grand Island Vikings indoor track team broke school records during the just concluded regular season.

Senior captain Tim Fargino continued his onslaught of school records as he improved on his own record in the 600-meter run by posting a 1:25.8

Fargino teamed up with Jordan Gibson, Chris Carter and Evan Tsembelis to break the 3,200m relay record with a 9:15.9 effort, good for sixth place.

Meaghan Hayes broke her own school record in the 55m hurdles withan 11.3 performance.

Sophomore Evan Tsembelis broke his own 3,200m record with a sixth place finish in 10:17.1 Senior captain Kyle Oursler had his best performance in the high jump, placing seventh with a 5-feet, 2-inch jump.

Other outstanding performances included personal bests by Joe Mash in the 3,200m, Bridget George and Sara Orsolitis in the 1,000m. Caitlyn Driscoll won her heat of the 600m and had her best time of the season in the 300m. In the sprints, Lindsey Boyle, Kelsey Mash, Darmathon Best and Matt Klock all had their best performances. Ryan Hagen was the team’s top finisher in the 1,000, followed closely by freshman Chris Stessing, while Gibson had his season-best mark in the 600m.

Kelly Cich ran well in the 600m, while Ellen Betterson, T.J. Howley and Joe Connors ran very well in the 300m. Sophomore Adam Alkhatib had his best shot put performance of the season. Driscoll teamed up with Cich, George and Betterson to take eighth place in the 1,600m relay. The boys 1,600m relay consisted of Hagen, Stessing, Oursler and Mash and placed 11th.

Overall, the boys team finished 10th out of the 34-team Section VI League. The boys and girls 1,600m relays qualified for sectionals along with three athletes in individual events: Fargino (in the 1,000m and 600m), Tim Boorady (shot put) and Oursler (high jump).

The state meet qualifier is Saturday, Feb. 24, at Fredonia.
