Local teams win hockey tournaments Niagara Wheatfield Tribune, December 14, 2006 Sterling Glass and the Sevenson Junior Purple Eagles both won hockey tournaments over the holiday in Niagara Junior Purple Eagles youth hockey. Sterling Glass won five games to take the Squirt Major Division title at the Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament on Nov. 24, 25 and 26, while Sevenson won the PeeWee Division tourney title. Both tourneys were played at Niagara University’s Dwyer Ice Arena. Tyler Shotwell and Justin Quinn were the goaltenders for Sterling Glass in the five wins, three of which were shutout victories. Sterling Glass surrendered just four goals in the five games en route to the tourney title. Sterling Glass beat Tonawanda 4-3 in overtime to win the championship game. They also had wins over the Wheatfield Blades (3-0 in the semifinals), Perinton (6-0), West Seneca (5-0) and Tonawanda (4-1). Matt McKenna led all scorers with five goals and three assists in the five games. Matt Paonessa had eight points as well, coming on four goals and four assists. In addition, Ryan Ball and Andrew Logar scored four times for the winners. Defensively, Adam Babiarz, Jacob Burford, Joseph Cecconi, Justin Nichols, Brandon Sabha and Cody Treichler played outstanding defense in front of Shotwell and Quinn. Likewise, Sevenson’s defense was instrumental in their tourney victory as they surrendered only three goals in three games and outscored their opposition 16-3. Sevenson beat West Seneca (4-1), Leaside (8-2) and Erie (4-0 in the championship game) to claim the title. David Whelan had the shutout in net in the title contest. Eleven Sevenson players found the back of the net with shots. Zak Laporte, Cory Becker, Zach Klapp, Tyler Lewis and Carson Cavers each scored two goals total in the three games, with Laporte and Becker adding a pair of assists as well. Brian Fry, Derek Stein, Mike Malaney, Richard Minicucci, Justin Frentzel and David James scored solo goals in the tourney. In other youth hockey regular season scores: Bantam Stuart Sports 3, Furans Skate Sharpening 2 Steven Sydor scored two goals to lead Stuart Sports. Andrew Krause added the other goal. For Furans, Nick Wylucki and Max Waterstrat scored. PeeWee BAC Pink Panthers 4, Dwyer Arena Red Devils 3 Darren DeSantis, Dominic Morrell, Mike Brydges and Tyler Oakley scored goals for the winners. South End Cycle Sabres 6, Arena Care Panthers 4 Adam Stanczyk scored twice for the Sabres, with Sarah Stanczyk, Michael Neal and Jeremy Felicetti adding single goals. For the Panthers, Jim Gallagher scored twice, with Matt Osinski and Kevin Dobson adding single goals. Fuccillo Chevrolet 3, Buffalo Granite and Marble Rockheads 2 Josh Ungaro, Clayton Tuck and Aaron Schauser scored for Fuccillo in the victory. Sevenson Jr. Purple Eagles 5, Jamestown Lakers 1 Kevin Danaher, Tyler Clegg, Fry, Stein, and James scored in a game played at the Jamestown Arena on Dec. 3. Sevenson Jr. Purple Eagles 9, Cheektowaga 1 Stein and Fry had two each, while James, Clegg, Malaney, Frentzel and Danaher chimed in with single goals in a game played at the Cheektowaga Recreation Center on Nov. 29. Squirt Lincoln Publishing Yellow Jackets 9, Justin Tyme Cafe Vaders 2 Tommy Corrao lit the lamp seven times with goals as the Yellow Jackets thrashed the Vaders. Joe Laurendi and Joe Scirto also scored for the winners. For the Vaders, Pashka Kovtunov scored two goals. Sterling Glass 9, Clarence 0 Paonessa had a hat trick for Sterling Glass in a travel league tilt played Dec. 2, with McKenna, Ball, Logar, Trevor Evans, Lucas Hurtt and Sean Richardson scoring single goals. Paonessa, Evans, Hurtt, Joey DeMunda, and Cody Treichler dished out two assists each. Sterling Glass 7, Cheektowaga 0 In a game played on Nov. 27, Evans scored four times and Sabha had four assists. Brown & Company Ice Rats 4, Gui’s Lumberjacks 4 Kevin Armstrong of the Ice Rats had a pair of goals, while Adriano Medici of the Lumberjacks scored three times. Armstrong’s second goal tied the game with just 10 seconds left. Mite Mac’s Antique Auto Parts 3, Favorite’s Pizza 1 Mike Wilson, Joey Boyko and Charlie Pratt scored for Mac’s, with Matt Dickerson scoring for Favorite’s. |
