Grand Island Dispatch, December 15, 2006

Outgoing board members of the Grand Island Soccer Club were honored recently for their years of service. From left, they are: Mark Schimley, Sherry Schimley, Ray Billica and Anne Blonski. Each has served the GISC for many years in various capacities.

At its December board meeting, the Grand Island Soccer Club honored the longstanding contributions of several outgoing board members and made plans for the future.

Mark and Sherry Schimley, Anne Blonski and former club president, Ray Billica, were thanked for their dedication and service to the youth of Grand Island. Each has served the GISC for many years in various capacities.

In other club matters:

•110 soccer balls were donated by GISC to a U.S. Marines platoon from Fort Drum, to be distributed to local youths in Baghdad.

•An initiative called “Soccer Start” is looking for donations of soccer shoes or cleats for inner city youth. Donations may be sent or dropped off at Sahlens Sports Park in Elma, SportsPlex in North Tonawanda or the Epic Center in Williamsville.

•The house league will be adding a division this year, with a U-19 age group. The board was approached by Amanda Albrecht, and after her presentation, the board agreed to add the division. Previously the oldest division was the U-15. If you are interested, contact House Coordinator Terri Pitts at terripitts@adelphia.net.

•The club is looking for volunteers to begin working in the following areas: U-7 house coordinator, overall house coordinator and director of public relations. If you are interested, call Brett Banker at 773-4905.
