The Ransomville Lions Club recently sponsored a Peace Poster Contest. In the photo, from left, are: Tyler Fisher, first-place winner; Lion Tina Clark, Ransomville Lions Peace Poster Contest chair; and Tyler Dent, third-place winner.

The Ransomville Lions held its first annual Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest at Stevenson’s Elementary School this fall.

Lions Club President Don Clark said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at Stevenson. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. We are so proud to be able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.” The posters were displayed at the Ransomville Free Library from Oct. 23 –27.

Judging of the 12 posters submitted took place Oct. 26, with the following individuals selected as judges: Lori Caso, CWM Waste Management; Lion Heidi Pippard, new member of the Ransomville Lions Club; MaryAlice Carr, teacher at Thomas Marks Elementary; Sue Holmes, retired librarian of Ransomville Free Library; and Tracy Bloom, art teacher at Niagara-Wheatfield School.

Winning posters were announced at a special reception on Oct. 28, at the Ransomville Free Library. The top winners are:

•First place: Tyler Fisher, a fifth-grade student at Stevenson’s Elementary School, who won a $75 prize.

•Second place: Dustin Fellows, who won $50.

•Third-place: Tyler Dent, who won $25.

All 12 participating students received an award from the Ransomville Lions Club for their visions of peace.

“Our club is cheering for Tyler as his poster advances in the competition, and we hope that his vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world,” said Lion Tina Clark, Ransomville Lions Club Peace Poster chair. Tyler Fisher’s poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, as well as multiple district and international rounds of competition, if he is to be declared the international grand prize winner.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $2,500, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500. If you wish to view past Lions International Peace Poster grand prize winners, go to www.lionsclubs.org.
