Earlier this month, at a Town of Wheatfield Council meeting, Town Recreation Director Edward Sturgeon reported the Town of Wheatfield Community Cheerleaders have been selected to compete in a national competition, which he called an “exceptional honor.”

Mary Brochey, president of the Wheatfield Cheerleaders, said the group received a bid last year to the Festival of Lights competition in Canada, but couldn’t go because of limited time to conduct fund-raising. This year, though, some of the 100 cheerleaders will head to the U.S. Spirit Nationals to compete from March 23 to 25 at Universal Studios in Orlando.

Sturgeon said the cheerleaders serve the town well, and he wished them well in competition in Florida.

“It’s a lot of work, a lot of fund-raising. It’s a lot of work just to get the kids there,” Brochey said of making a trip to nationals. The fund-raising is in addition to the practices the girls attend one day a week and twice a week from August through December. The group, made up of girls from 8 to 15 years old, has 100 members. The three oldest teams are going to Florida, where the goal is just for the girls to perform their best, Brochey said.

“They do very well in the local competition,” Brochey said. “We’ve taken Grand Champion in the last three or four competitions we’ve been to.”

A national competition, though, is a different atmosphere, she said. Nationals are pressure packed, bigger and flashier, she said, but the group has the constant support of town leaders such as Town Supervisor Timothy Demler, she said.

“The Town of Wheatfield is wonderful,” Brochey said. “Their rec. director, Ed Sturgeon, is there to give us anything we need.”
