DelMonte donates computers

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, October 14, 2006

Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, D-138th, has announced that Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Niagara Falls and Stella Niagara Education Park in Lewiston will receive a total of 20 refurbished computers to support the schools’ educational programs. The computers were made available through a state program administered by the New York Power Authority.

“Computers are such a vital tool in today’s educational environment. DelMonte said. “The young students at Mount Carmel School and Stella Niagara will benefit from the smart reuse of these computer resources by preparing them for tomorrow’s challenges.”

The computers donated to the two schools were provided through a state law that created a program authorizing NYPA to provide refurbished computers to educational institutions across New York state.

“Thanks to Assemblywoman DelMonte, the donation of this much needed computer equipment will go a long way in assisting with the education of our children here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School,” said Principal Jeannine Fortunate.

“At Stella Niagara, our goal is to create an educational community that shares a purpose and interest both in individual achievement and social responsibility,” said the principal, Sister Margaret Sullivan. “With these donations of refurbished computers our students will be better prepared to achieve their future educational goals, thanks to Assemblywoman DelMonte.”

NYPA uses about 1,500 computers in its normal operations and replaces about 400 to 500 computers annually. Its reconditioning of surplus computers includes thorough cleaning of the equipment, replacement of any broken or missing parts, as well as installation of a new operating system and of at least 128 megabytes of memory.

Since 2002, NYPA has been donating computers to educational facilities throughout New York State. More than 400 reconditioned computers have been donated since the program’s inception.

“The State Assembly continues to invest in the future of New York’s children by pushing for additional funding for our schools, special education programs and promoting expansion of universal Pre-K programs,” DelMonte said.
