Holy Ghost plans Christmas market

Niagara Wheatfield Tribune, September 28, 2006

On Saturday, Dec. 2, Holy Ghost Lutheran School’s fellowship hall will be lined with festive stands featuring unique handmade crafts and traditional treats.

Bergholz’s version of a Christmas market, inspired by the traditional German Christkindl Market of Christ Child Market, is a festive event prepared by the Holy Ghost Parent Teacher League.

Christkindl highlights will include a Christmas craft show, silent auction, book faire, bake sale and lunch featuring German sausage and sauerkraut.

The tradition of the Christmas market dates to 16th century Germany, when craftspeople erected stalls in the heart of German cities. The stalls had food, drink and entertainment to meet the demand for purchasing presents after Martin Luther had set the fashion in 1545 of giving presents to children at Christmas.

Crafters are invited to contact Diane Stoelting to make reservations for a table by Sunday, Oct. 15.
