Town of Porter to host third annual Cabbage Festival

Cabbage Leaf Fashion Show highlights the day long event

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, September 9, 2006

Plans are now in the works, and in coming weeks the smell of cabbage will once again fill the air in Ransomville.

The third annual Cabbage Festival will take place on Sunday, Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Ransomville Fire Company, located on Route 93 near Ransomville Road. The Town of Porter, the Ransomville Business and Professional Association and the Lower Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to host this year’s festival.

Highlighting the event is the Cabbage Leaf Fashion Show for adults and children. Don’t miss the show that begins at 3 p.m. on the fire company grounds. Primary sponsors for the event include CWM Chemical Services LLC, the Modern Corporation, First Niagara Bank, and HSBC Bank.

Organizers report that contestants are now being sought for the fashion show. Contestants are invited to design and create an outfit made of cabbage leaves that will be showcased during this uniquely popular event. Cabbage leaves, courtesy of Peter Baker Farms in Ransomville, will be provided to each contestant.

“The Cabbage Leaf Fashion Show was the hit of last year’s festival,” commented Lower Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce President, Sandy (Hays) Mies). “Contestants had great fun and were incredibly creative with their designs.”

Hays reports there will be two categories interested contestants can register in -- adults or children between the ages of 18 months and 4 years. Only 12 contestants will be featured in each category. Deadline for participation is Sept. 20 or until 12 applications in each category have been received. There is no fee to participate. To register, call Christine Falsetti at the Lower Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce at 754-9500, Ext. 102. All contestants must be pre-registered without exception.

Mies adds that it is highly recommended that first-time contestants attend a workshop on Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Ransomville Fire Company where costume creation assistance will be available. Contestants must register with the Chamber prior to the workshop.

But there’s much more to this year’s Cabbage than just the fashion show, organizers point out. Also featured will be an array of cabbage-inspired dishes; a farmer’s market, crafts, a recipe contest, cabbage toss competitions and more. Entertainment will be provided by the Country Classics Band.

Children will be able to enjoy free pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, pony rides, the Niagara River Anglers Fish Pond, a fun run and other activities. Festival-goers can also enjoy watching the creation of chain saw art.

Other festival sponsors include Brown and Company LLP, CRA Infrastructure and Engineering, Flexcare Inc., Michael Dowd, Esq., Scott Danahy Naylon, KiPo Chevrolet of Ransomville and Lewiston Computer Services.
