This past spring, 13 volunteers participated in a Grand Island cleanup coordinated by the Friends of the Buffalo Niagara Riverkeepers. Their efforts were part of an extensive Western New York cleanup.

Participants, led by Jim Tomkins of the Riverkeepers and Quality Quest, removed debris from green areas along Woods Creek, Spicer Creek and Buckhorn State Park. Also participating were Greg Madejski, Roger Cook, J.T. Tomkins, and his sons, Nick, 15, and Ben, 12, all of Grand Island. A kayaker from North Carolina who happened to be in the Buckhorn area joined the volunteer effort, as well.

The town of Grand Island and Quality Quest assisted in removing the debris that was collected.

The Riverkeepers presented a proclamation of appreciation to the volunteers and to Grand Island’s Quality Quest environmental group.

This Saturday, June 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. the town is holding its annual cleanup along Grand Island Boulevard to prepare the town for the Independence Day Parade. Volunteers are asked to wear old clothes and gloves and meet at Town Hall.
