Relay
For Life snapshots
Grand Island Dispatch,
June 16, 2006
Grand
Island’s Relay For Life brought out the community in full force to celebrate
survival, support and camaraderie in the fight against cancer. The Survivors
Lap honored those who have conquered cancer and those who are still in
the struggle against the disease. Grand Island high School art teacher
Cindy Wynne was the subject of dualing fund-raising campaigns for the
Relay. She agreed to cut her hair an inch for every $25 that students
raised. But another group of students decided to raise funds to try to
save her 30 inches of hair. The pro-haircut team raised more money and
won, so Wynne parted with about almost a foot of her long, dark locks.
Relay teams, such as that of the Grand Island school bus drivers, shown
here, set up tables and tents around the Grand Island track. Some sold
products or baked goods to continue the fund-raising for the American
Cancer Society. Many were glad for the tents, as the evening was cold
and blustery. Nonetheless, the event was a resounding success, with $110,000
raised for the American Cancer Society. (photos by Brent Minet, Donna
