Soluri seeks fourth term

Lewiston Porter Sentinel, April 8, 2006

Despite past health problems, current disagreements with environmental groups over the Robert Moses Parkway and Lewiston plateau, and future economic uncertainties, Village of Lewiston Mayor Richard Soluri said Monday he will seek a fourth term in June. Encouraged by family and friends, and saying “I really have excellent health now,” Soluri said he and board members Bill Geiben, Terry Collesano (both of whom, incidentally, face re-election this year), Ken Kenney and Mike Marra all have more work to accomplish.

“We hope to move forward as a team,” he said.

Soluri’s announcement drew applause from the small group of residents huddled in his office attending the board’s monthly work session.

“I came here for the mayor,” said Niagara County Legislator John Ceretto, D-12th District, who called Soluri a mentor. “I’m so happy with what I’m hearing.”

Dispute over Trees

Residents Jim and Jackie Lampman expressed dismay over what they said were trees cut down on First Street; trees chopped to provide “The Niagara at Barton Hill” lodgers with a better view of the Niagara River.

Soluri said they had received erroneous information.

“We all like trees just as much as anything else. This has nothing to do with the hotel,” he said. “We’re creating more green space on the landing.”

Public Hearings Set

The board will host a pair of public hearings in coming weeks. On Monday, at 5:30 p.m., an information session will be held on the tentative 2006-07 budget. On Monday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m., the board will hear from residents on the advisability of embracing a local law adopting the state Property Maintenance Code.
