Falcons’ playoff dream end in quarterfinals

Niagara Wheatfield Tribune, March 2, 2006

Byron Mulkey (center) drives to the hoop for a layup during Niagara-Wheatfield’s final basketball game, a 64-53 loss to Clarence in the Class AA quarterfinals on Feb. 22. Mulkey had 26 points to lead all scorers. The Falcons fell behind early, 7-2, before rallying to take a 20-11 lead after one quarter. Mulkey had 12 points in the first quarter and 17 at halftime as the Niagara-Wheatfield took a 31-27 lead into the locker room. Clarence bolted out to a 33-31 lead just 40 seconds into the second half and never looked back. They dominated the offensive backboard in the second half, while the Falcons struggled to make perimeter shots over the Clarence zone defense. Clarence scored only two baskets in the fourth quarter but made 13 of 23 free throw attempts to prevent an Niagara-Wheatfield comeback. (photo by Larry Austin)
